VersaLogic’s rugged single board computer and embedded computer products are designed for critical applications that value reliability and long-life. Industry-standard form factors such as PC/104 and COM are available in standard (COTS), modified (MCOTS) and custom versions.
Rugged x86 compatible embedded computers are designed, manufactured and tested to be reliable in critical and demanding environments, including extreme temperature (-40° to +85°C), high impact (shock), and vibration.
To ensure that products are reliable in the field, VersaLogic has rigorous design, verification and testing processes. From strict component evaluation and selection in the initial design, to worst-case stress testing, to state-of-the-art compliance and validation of high-speed signals and external interfaces, to extensive power and thermal testing, VersaLogic products have seen the worst before they take on your application.
Versatile cards with lots of IO options on the card and via SPX or mini PCIe expansion, rugged and reliable operating in 20G shock and extended temperature environments. These cards are high-end for rugged applications.
For applications where size, weight, and power are critical, VersaLogic’s EPU embedded processing unit line fills the bill. These two-board sets create a smaller overall package than single board formats.
Example: The Blackbird (VL-EPU-4562) provides very high performance in a compact 95 x 125mm footprint. Featuring the Intel Skylake CPU, both dual and quad core versions are available with high performance video processing.
The Blackbird features; up to 32 GB RAM, two GbE, USB, 3.0 ports, USB 2.0 ports, 6GB, SATA ports and three MiniPCIe expansion sockets.
The COMe Extended sized embedded server unit ESU was designed for edge server and HPEC applications requiring very high performance processing and high data bandwidth.
Example: The Grizzly (VL-ESU-5070) is a rugged embedded server featuring an Intel 16-core processor, -40°C to +85°C operation, two 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ ports, and up to 128 GB of ECC memory. It is ideal for high performance/high data bandwidth applications. Two Mini PCIe sockets and an M.2 site provide for expansion and on-board storage.
Arm-based EPCs Designed for applications requiring an economical, complete, low power embedded computer. Available in single and multi-core models.
Example: The Tetra (VL-EPC-2700) combines low-power Arm processing with quad-core performance and VersaLogic’s rugged design and validation methodology. This complete single board computer leverages the COM-Basic size (95 x 125 mm) for standardised mounting. The on-board power conditioner accepts 8 to 17 VDC input to fully support 12-volt automotive systems.
The industry-standard PC/104 format features a self-stacking design that does not require a card cage or other interconnect support. Expansion modules and accessories are available.
Example: Sabretooth (VL-EPMe-51) A high performance embedded computer with Xeon-E and 9th Generation Intel® Core™ processors, 3-Bank Type 1 expansion port and error-correcting memory. Includes high capacity fast NVMe SSD storage, TPM 2.0 security and up to 32 GB ECC RAM.
EBX is a larger format that provides an excellent balance of economy and functionality. This bolt-down format supports embedded designs with higher-performance CPUs, generous on-board I/O functions and PC/104 expansion.
Example: Viper (VL-EBX-38) Combines the I/O rich EBX form factor with an outstanding power/performance mix using the Intel “Bay Trail” processor while maintaining the traditional PC/104 plus expansion interface. Available in single, dual and quad core versions, it is a versatile option for systems engineers that require performance and flexibility.
The EPIC standard is sized midway between the EBX and PC/104 form factors. This bolt-down SBC format provides considerable performance and I/O capacity, while supporting PC/104 expansion.
Example: Newt (VL-EPIC-17) An economical single board computer featuring extensive I/O capabilities, low power and fanless operation over the full industrial temperature (-40º to +85ºC) range. Newt takes advantage of DMP’s Vortex86DX System on Chip (SoC) for 800 MHz performance with only 3.6W typical power draw.
Computer on Modules – COM
Example: VL-COMm-33 is an extremely small and rugged Computer on Module (COM) based on the industry-standard COM Express mini form factor. Roughly the size of a credit card, the VL-COMm-33 has been engineered to meet the requirements of aviation, defence, industrial control and medical applications while adhering to stringent regulatory standards. Equipped with an Intel Atom Bay Trail E38xx processor, it is designed to withstand extreme temperature, impact and vibration.
Available in single, dual, and quad core versions, the COMm-33 provides extreme performance for its size. It does so at moderate power consumption (3.5 to 7.25W typical), in a very small package. The COMm-33 provides compatibility with a broad range of standard x86 application development tools for reduced development time.
MINI PCIE EXPANSION
VersaLogic carries a full range of rugged, high-quality embedded computer products in the mPCIe form factor.
Example: The VL-MPEe-E4 is an extremely small and rugged module for connecting Gigabit Ethernet Over Fibre optic cables. This industry-standard Mini PCIe module provides an easy and economical way to add a fibre-based Ethernet interface to embedded computer systems.
Ethernet over fibre offers an extremely dependable, highly secure Ethernet connection that operates over a much longer distance than copper. Where security matters, a fibre optic connection excels. Fibre optic cables have no electromagnetic signature, making them very difficult to tap compared to wired connections.

Example: The VL-EPH-V6 module provides a rugged converter from standard mini-DisplayPort video output to LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) display panel output. It allows system designers the ability to utilise their existing LVDS video panels with the latest embedded computer video output (mini-DisplayPort).
